Ontario’s police watchdog is looking into the death of a 33-year-old man who was found in “medical distress” early Wednesday morning while being held in a York Region police cell.
The man had turned himself in at a York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill on Tuesday, according to a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) news release.
He was there due to a warrant for breach of probation, the SIU states.
According to the release, he was taken into custody and placed into a cell. Early Wednesday morning, around 1 a. m., police noticed he was in medical distress, it says.
Officers provided “medical attention,” and the SIU mentions that the man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The SIU has scheduled a post-mortem for Thursday, and anyone with information about this case should reach out.
