A 41-year-old man has been charged following a deadly accident on Highway 401 in Pickering early Sunday morning.

Provincial police report that a pickup truck was driving the wrong way on the eastbound lanes of the highway near Salem Road when it collided with a passenger vehicle just after 2:30 a. m.

Authorities state that the driver of the passenger vehicle, aged 38, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck, aged 41, has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and impaired operation causing death.

Police also mentioned that another crash took place around 4:25 a. m. in the same area involving another passenger vehicle and a police cruiser.

The Durham Regional Police Service Association shared that both officers involved are in good spirits and are expected to fully recover.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called to investigate the incident involving the Durham police cruiser.

According to them, Durham police were assisting with traffic control alongside an MTO support truck when an eastbound vehicle breached barricades and hit the back of their cruiser.

“The driver of the civilian vehicle, and two officers from the cruiser, were transported to hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle was diagnosed with a serious injury. The two officers were released from hospital with minor injuries,” the SIU said in a statement.

The SIU is an independent government agency that looks into incidents involving police officials that may lead to death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or firearm discharge at an individual.
