Julie Anne Ruppel (nee Hughes)

Julie passed away at her home in Collingwood on April 6th, 2017, at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hughes from Kitchener-Waterloo, her husband George Leonard Ruppel from Elmira, and her brother Ronald Maxwell Hughes from Calgary, Alberta. Julie attended Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and got married in K-W before moving to Collingwood with her husband after living in the Greater Toronto area. They traveled extensively around the globe and cherished over 40 summers at their cottage in Oliphant. In her younger years, she took ballet lessons, played the violin, studied elocution, and practiced ornamental swimming. She was part of the Canadian Girls in Training (United Church of Canada), joined a YWCA club in K-W, received the first honorary life membership in the Etobicoke Jaycettes, and was involved with By the Bay and Probus Club of Pretty River. Julie volunteered for over nine years at Collingwood Hospital and loved playing bridge.
She worked for the Ontario Provincial Government in the Ministry of Northern Affairs where she traveled to remote areas to teach computer skills. With a strong interest in politics since she was just 12 years old, she campaigned for the Progressive Conservative Party early on. Julie is survived by her sister-in-law Kay Hughes along with her niece Shona Lauzon and nephews Jamie Hughes, Kyle Hughes, and Murray Hughes. Many grand-nieces, grand-nephews, family members, and friends will fondly remember Julie for her sharp wit, intelligence, and kindness.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Reception will take place at Raglan Village (89 Raglan Street, Collingwood) on Thursday, April 20th from 2:00 p. m. to 4:00 p. m., where friends are welcome to drop by during that time frame. If you wish to make a donation in memory of Julie Ruppel, contributions can be made to either the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation or to the Toronto Humane Society.
