The nonprofit Grand Rapids Sister Cities International mentioned that Vaughan, located just north of Toronto, is “one of Canada’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids is looking into a proposal for a new sister city partnership with Vaughan, Ontario, in Canada.

This proposal was shared on Sunday by the nonprofit Grand Rapids Sister Cities International (GRSCI).

According to GRSCI, Vaughan is “one of Canada’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities,” situated just north of Toronto.

The proposal will be discussed and voted on during the City Commission of the Whole meeting scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 10.

“If approved, this partnership would mark an important step in strengthening cross-border relationships rooted in economic collaboration, cultural connection, and people-to-people exchange,” GRSCI stated.

As per GRSCI’s information, sister cities are friendships between U. S. cities and international locations. They help foster understanding and connection among different cultures.

The City of Grand Rapids currently has six sister cities:

Omihachiman, Japan Bielsko-Biala, Poland Ga District, Ghana Gangnam-gu, South Korea Perugia, Italy Zapopan, Mexico

“This moment reflects the power of citizen diplomacy,” said GRSCI leadership. “Sister City relationships are built by communities, sustained by volunteers, and strengthened through shared values. We’re excited to invite Grand Rapids to be part of this next chapter with Canada.”
