Authorities report that a driver has been charged following an accident in Waterloo that resulted in a young cyclist being hospitalized, and the child’s parents have also received tickets.
The incident occurred around 8:40 a. m. on Tuesday when regional police announced news of the collision, with officers dispatched to the intersection of University Avenue East and Woolwich Street.
Initially, police indicated that a pedestrian was involved and injuries were noted. They later clarified that the crash involved a 12-year-old cyclist and a Toyota pick-up truck.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a 46-year-old man from Waterloo, did not sustain any injuries.
On Thursday, police confirmed that this man was charged with making an unsafe turn and driving with an obstructed view.
The youth’s parents also received a Provincial Offence Notice for allowing someone under 16 to ride a bicycle without wearing an appropriate helmet.
