April 30, 2026 The province moves closer to establishing fast, reliable, and affordable light rail transit, keeping workers employed and boosting economic growth HAMILTON – The Ontario government has granted a contract for the first significant phase of civil and utility work on the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT), marking an important step in the province’s initiative to provide fast, dependable, and cost-effective transit throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The 14-kilometre LRT will enhance the local economy by generating around 6,000 jobs each year during construction and up to 1,000 permanent positions for operations and maintenance after the project is finished. “Our government is making historic investments in public transit to fight gridlock and keep people moving,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Today’s milestone brings us one step closer to delivering the Hamilton LRT, a project that will support 50,000 daily riders, connecting more people to jobs and housing and giving families and workers more choice and better access to fast, affordable public transit.” The Hamilton LRT Civil and Utilities contract includes preparatory tasks along the LRT route such as utility relocations, grade separations, road reconstruction as well as improved sidewalks and traffic control systems. This contract will also move forward with design plans for replacing the bridge over Highway 403, constructing a new LRT underpass beneath the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Hamilton Subdivision near Gage Avenue, and upgrading the Queenston Road bridge over the Red Hill Valley Parkway. Once completed, the Hamilton LRT will make tens of thousands of jobs easily accessible via fast and reliable transit. Key stops include Mc Master University, Hamilton Stadium, Eastgate Square, Ottawa Street, Gage Park, downtown Hamilton among other essential locations. The LRT will also link riders with Hamilton Street Railway services as well as GO Transit across the city.
