The City of Barrie has had to utilize a landfill site as a temporary location for snow storage, following several weeks of exceptional snowfall.

City officials informed that the choice to use the Ferndale Drive North property was essential as snow removal continues under what has become the longest ongoing “Significant Weather Event declaration” in Barrie’s history.

This decision comes after running out of space at its operations centre, with reports indicating that the city has received about 300 centimetres, or more than 9.5 feet of snow, since November 1.

Officials stated that this temporary site will be in use for the foreseeable future, with no end date established yet.

“It is dependent on additional snow accumulations and our requirements to do snow lifts to remove excess snow from areas throughout the city,” said Dave Friary, the city’s director of operations.

Friary clarified that the snow isn’t being mixed with household waste. Instead, it’s being placed on an unused part of land at the landfill property, a method that has been utilized by the city in prior years.

Residents living nearby might notice increased activity during nighttime hours as snow hauling progresses.

Friary mentioned that there are measures in place to reduce noise and light disturbances during overnight operations, including building a berm.

Barrie has been under a Significant Weather Event since December 28, 2025; this status remains active as crews work to clear narrowed roads and large snowbanks.

The city also noted that this year’s winter cleanup effort far surpasses previous events in both size and cost.

“This winter’s snow removal effort represents the largest volume of snow we have had to remove,” Friary stated. “Previous Significant Weather Events typically lasted one to three days, causing only short delays and little to no additional cost.”

“In contrast, the unprecedented snowfall over a compressed time period and extended duration of this event resulted in significantly higher costs along with increased coordination and oversight.”

The city indicated that the weather alert won’t be lifted until all roads, cycling lanes, and other affected areas are fully restored; updates will be shared as conditions evolve.
