The Oro-Medonte landfill will stay closed until further notice as the Ministry of Labour investigates the site on Old Barrie Road.

An employee tragically lost their life Monday morning while working at a landfill managed by Simcoe County, officials confirmed.

Local emergency services, including officers from Orillia OPP and Oro-Medonte Fire and Emergency Services, were dispatched to the landfill facility on Old Barrie Road around 8:30 a. m. on December 1 after reports that someone had been hit by a commercial vehicle transporting garbage.

Police began an initial investigation, but Orillia OPP officials later stated that the Ministry of Labour had been informed and would take over the investigation.

A spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development confirmed they were alerted about a workplace incident in Simcoe County.

“It was reported that a worker was struck by a vehicle and later succumbed to their injuries,” said the spokesperson.

Inspectors have been assigned to look into the incident, but the ministry representative mentioned they aren’t releasing more details at this time.

A statement on Simcoe County’s website also verified that county employees were involved in the incident and that one person had died.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues affected by this tragic loss,” read the statement. “We remain committed to supporting our staff and ensuring they have access to all necessary resources.”

Due to the ongoing investigation and out of respect for the family’s privacy, county officials stated no additional information would be shared.

The landfill will continue to be closed until further notice because of this investigation.

Flags have also been lowered to half-staff at the county’s administration center in Midhurst.

If anyone has information, they can contact the Ministry of Labour at 1-877-202-0008.
