COBDEN – Twelve-year-old speed skater Clara Mc Kendry from Renfrew is ready to advance in her young sports career as she has qualified for the Canadian youth championships after just four years in the game.

Mc Kendry, who studies at Cobden Public School, will represent Ontario during the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships taking place in Calgary, Alta. from Feb. 6 to 8. This will be her first time competing at this event. She trains with the Ottawa Pacers Speed Skating Club while also practicing regularly in her hometown of Renfrew and nearby Cobden.

Clara began speed skating at eight years old because she wanted to skate faster than what hockey allowed.

“Well, I was playing hockey and then I told my mom that I just wanted to skate fast and she got me into speed skating,” she said.

Her training routine is quite rigorous with daily ice practice along with off-ice conditioning exercises. Her dad, Jack Mac Donald, who coaches the intermediate group with the Pacers, explained that their schedule shows how dedicated they need to be for high-level competition.

“Every day we’re on the ice,” Mac Donald said. “This is an hour to an hour and a half. And then when we get home, we do dry land.”

The dryland training includes strength exercises that mimic skating moves off the ice. Mac Donald mentioned that Mc Kendry often reaches speeds around 40 kilometers per hour, pointing out that speed skaters keep up that pace over much longer distances compared to hockey players.

Mc Kendry participates in various events such as the 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter races along with team relays and pursuits. At nationals, she’ll be part of Team Ontario in both individual events and team competitions.

The qualification for nationals involved several time trials and selection camps where results were key according to Mac Donald.

“They only take the top two,” he said.

Kendra’s journey included a quick return home from an overseas trip just before competing in trials; despite limited rest time she managed to secure her spot heading into nationals feeling cautiously optimistic.Clara Mc Kendry-a twelve-year-old speed skater from Renfrew-is representing Ontario at the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships happening in Calgary from Feb. 6-8. When asked about what she loves most about skating Mc Kendry highlighted both camaraderie as well as competition.
“The friends-the excitement-I don’t know-I just like everything about it-it’s really fun,” she shared.
