Doug Thompson, aged 66, who lived in Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away on January 27th, 2026 after a brief illness. He was born in Fort William, Ontario and had been a licensed Truck and Coach and Automotive Technician since around 1974. Doug worked at various garages and shops such as Superior Trailers, Western Star, Peterbilt, Miller Precast, Gridlink, among others. He was well-known for his skills in engine and transmission building. Cars were his true passion; he built many of them in his garage. Rather than buying parts, he would create or fabricate as much as he could himself so that every build was special in its own way. Doug enjoyed teaching his grandsons how things work and often had them help with repairs.
He leaves behind his wife Cheryl; son Kyle (Marlena); step-sons Jamie (Carrie) and Ronald (Paul) Shaughnessy; grandsons Damian and Declan Thompson along with Finley Shaughnessy; sisters Pat Maki (Bob), Irene Parks (Fred), and Janet Bodchon; brothers Bob (Heather) and Gordon (Susan); father-in-law Keith Empey; mother-in-law Anne Empey; brother-in-law Kevin Empey; plus many nieces and nephews.
Doug is predeceased by his parents Fred and Janet; sister Barbara; and brother Geoffrey.
Cremation has taken place.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at West Arthur Community Centre – 1914 Arthur St W, Thunder Bay.
