May 28, 1945 – April 22, 2026
We are heartbroken to share that Kezia Mamkwa (nee Winter), age 80 years, from Kingfisher Lake First Nation, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 7:56pm. She spent her last moments at home with her loving family by her side.
Kezia was preceded in death by her dear husband, Jeremiah “Jerry” Mamakwa; son Hosea Mamakwa; brother Noah Winter; daughter-in-law Pearl Mamakwa; and grandchildren Kristen Sakakeep and Kevin Mamakwa.
Kezia will be remembered fondly by her children Esther Sakakeep, Jonathan Mamakwa, MPP Sol Mamakwa and Zack Mamakwa; siblings Mary Lou Winter, Jemima Anderson and Micah Winter. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. We truly appreciate all the prayers and support during this time.
Kezia had a strong commitment to both her family and Community. She played a vital role in the Kingfisher Lake First Nation Health Team, providing care long before a clinic was established. Proud of her Native Heritage, she shared Traditional Teachings with younger generations. Kezia loved the outdoors and enjoyed living off the land-whether it was trapping, fishing or hunting with her husband or preparing tasty meals for everyone at the camps. Her kindness and love will be missed deeply but the lessons she taught us will always remain in our hearts.
A Wake Service for Kezia is set for Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in Thunder Bay at the WESTFORT CHAPEL, located at 420 West Gore Street at James. The service will be officiated by Father Gordon Holroyd.
Following this service, Kezia will be taken back home to Kingfisher Lake First Nation for a Funeral Service on Monday, April 27, 2026 at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church led by Bishop Lydia Mamakwa. Interment will take place afterward in the Community Cemetery.
