A pickup truck driver has been charged in connection with the death of a passenger in another vehicle after driving the wrong way on an Ontario highway, according to police.
The accident occurred shortly after 2:40 a. m. on Sunday when OPP officers were alerted about a pickup truck that was heading the wrong direction on the eastbound collector lanes of Highway 401 near Salem Road.
Authorities say the pickup truck collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of a 38-year-old passenger in that vehicle at the scene.
Additionally, there was a “secondary collision” nearby involving a police cruiser and another passenger vehicle just before 4:30 a. m., which left officers with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Eastbound Highway 401 was closed at Brock Road and Whites Road while investigators worked at the scene, but those closures have now been lifted.
The OPP updated on Sunday that the 41-year-old driver of the pickup truck is facing charges for dangerous operation causing death and impaired operation causing death.
The names of both the accused and victim have not yet been released.
The accused is expected to appear in court on Sunday to respond to these charges.
