A teenager has been hurt in a rock fall at Saltwick Bay, close to Whitby.

HM Coastguard reported that rescue teams from Whitby and Ravenscar responded to the scene on Thursday afternoon.

A passerby helped the boy by applying a bandage to a “severe upper leg injury” and kept him warm, according to a social media update from Whitby Coastguard.

He was then transported on the Whitby inshore lifeboat to the RNLI boathouse where he was moved into an ambulance.

The coastguard mentioned that teams on site had evaluated “the safest options for extraction,” and considering the nature of the injury and rough terrain, a stretcher carry up the steep path or a rope extraction “would likely have caused significant pain and distress.”

While this was happening, another rock fall took place in the same area, prompting coastguard teams to move several families away from the cliff base to safety.

The team cautioned that cliffs along the coastline can be “incredibly unpredictable.”

A spokesperson said rock falls can occur without warning, and what appears stable “often isn’t, particularly after periods of wet weather, followed by dry spells, frost, or ongoing erosion.”
