Almost 200 calls from the same cellphone went to 911 in Guelph within a little over an hour on Thursday after the phone fell into water, according to police.

The faulty device kept 911 operators “hopping” since they received the first call just before 11 a. m., Guelph Police said in a news release on Friday.

“There was no voice contact on any of the calls, which continued nonstop until shortly after noon while operators tried to manage new calls,” police stated.

The 911 call-takers were able to trace the phone back to an address in Guelph’s east end, as reported by police.

Officers then visited the home and spoke with the owner, who explained that their phone malfunctioned after it was dropped in water.

“The owner had no idea the phone was auto-dialing 911 until officers knocked on their door,” police said.
