CALGARY – A prominent figure in the Alberta separatist movement insists that a Conservative government won’t halt their efforts to break away from Canada.

Jeffrey Rath serves as the general counsel for the separatist advocacy group Stay Free Alberta.

He mentions that while a Conservative government aligns better with Alberta’s interests, federalism isn’t the solution.

Rath attended the Conservative Convention in Calgary this weekend, where he heard Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre speak on Friday.

In his speech, Poilievre pointed fingers at Liberals for both past and ongoing separatist movements in Alberta and Quebec, claiming they have created uncertainty for the nation’s youth.

He stated that Ottawa is also infringing “on Alberta’s energy sector and Quebec’s jurisdiction.”

This report by The Canadian Press was first Jan. 31, 2026.
