A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison and a 15-year driving ban following a hit and run that resulted in the death of a teenager in Vaughan in 2024, according to York Regional Police.

In a news release issued Tuesday, officials stated that Harnoor Chauhan from Vaughan received his sentence this week after pleading guilty in September to dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident causing death, and public mischief related to the death of a 16-year-old.

Authorities report that the teen was riding a mini-bike when he was struck by Chauhan’s Mercedes-Benz at around 10:45 p. m. on May 21 of that year, near Forest Drive and Dunstan Crescent.

Chauhan left the scene, and the teen was later declared dead, police say. Shortly after the collision, officers were called to another location where Chauhan claimed his vehicle had been carjacked.

“Following a thorough investigation, officers determined the carjacking was a false report and the complainant was identified as the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run,” the news release reads.

York police emphasize that road safety is a “shared responsibility,” reminding all motorists of their legal and ethical duty to stay at the scene of any accident.”
