Nearly 100 people came together on Monday evening to remember the victims of a tragic house fire that is thought to be arson in Richmond Hill.

The fire, which took place near Skywood Drive and Rollinghill Road, resulted in two fatalities and left three others in critical condition. Emergency services were alerted to the scene just before 3 a. m. on September 1.

York Regional Police report that the two individuals who passed away in hospital due to the fire-a young girl aged 11 and a 24-year-old woman named Helya Bahari-Kashani from Richmond Hill-were confirmed as homicide victims.

The vigil attracted family members, friends, and local residents at French Royalist Park, close to where the incident occurred.

Victim remembered as ‘absolutely lovely person’

Freya Abbas attended high school with Bahari-Kashani and described her as someone who was positive, kind, and friendly.

“She really had a positive outlook on the world, so that’s something that I will try to continue as well. That’s something that I really look up to her for,” she told CBC on Monday.

Sophia Wan also knew Bahari-Kashani from their drama classes at high school.

“Helya was an absolutely lovely person,” she said. “She’s probably one of the sweetest and most lovely people I’ve ever met.”

Wan mentioned she would remember Bahari-Kashani for her acting talent and her kindness.

“She always saw the good in people and wanted the best for them,” Wan said.

Police stated there are no new updates regarding the investigation.

Richmond Hill Mayor David West was among those paying tribute at the vigil.

“When something like this happens, it happens to all of us. This is exactly how we get through times like this,” West remarked.

A Go Fund Me page has been established to assist the family during this difficult time.

If anyone witnessed anything prior to the fire or has video evidence, they are encouraged to reach out to police.
