A team from St. Catharines and another from Stoney Creek are heading to a robotics world championship at the end of this month. Team 2056 – OP Robotics from Orchard Park Secondary School secured first place at the FIRST Robotics Ontario Provincial Championship held in Niagara Falls this weekend. Following closely behind, the Simbiotics from Governor Simcoe Secondary School took second place after achieving a world record with an impressive 868 points in their first round while collaborating with two other teams during the finals. The competition involved robots shooting balls into a central hub, earning points for scoring as well as technical skill. Approximately 100 robotics teams from around the province participated. This was the inaugural robotics event hosted at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre, which provided students interested in various science fields an opportunity to build crucial skills. The winning robot created by Governor Simcoe Secondary School, named “Simbot Tim,” was designed entirely from scratch within just a few months. Both teams are set to compete at the world championships taking place in Houston, Texas, from April 29 to May 2.
