A 38-year-old woman has lost her life after a serious accident that shut down a major section of the expressway in Kitchener on Monday morning.
As reported by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the southbound ramp from Highway 7 West to the eastbound lanes of Highway 8 is closed due to the crash that occurred around 7:30 a. m.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt from the OPP stated that the woman, who was from Waterloo, lost control of her vehicle on the ramp. She went up a snow embankment, crossed over a concrete barrier, and fell onto the highway below. Sadly, she was declared dead at the scene.
Schmidt noted that this was not an isolated incident; it was actually the second vehicle to fall off that same ramp onto the highway on Monday morning.
In an update shared via social media later in the afternoon, Schmidt mentioned that contractors from the Ministry of Transportation will keep the flyover ramp to Highway 8 closed until they can clear away the hazardous snow embankment.
He explained that snow pushed onto the shoulder of the ramp created a raised area where vehicles could slide into it and go over the concrete wall onto the highway underneath.
“Plows are coming through, clearing the highways and pushing that snow off to the side. In this case, they can’t push it over the wall because it would go down onto the highway below,” said Schmidt.
The flyover ramp is expected to remain closed for most of Monday and could affect afternoon traffic.
According to Schmidt, road conditions are thought to be factors contributing to these crashes early Monday morning.
