Environment Canada reports that a large part of Southern Ontario will see up to 25 cm of snow over the next two days.

This snowfall warning is predicted to remain in effect until Monday morning. In response, organizations like Gore Park Community Outreach are gearing up to support those in need.

“It’s really important that we make a presence here today,” said Linda Watson, hot meals coordinator with Gore Park Community Outreach.

No matter the weather-whether it’s rain or freezing temperatures-Gore Park Community Outreach sets up every Saturday in the parking lot outside Hamilton City Hall to provide free hot meals and groceries.

“We knew that the people that would come out today would be the ones that were truly in need,” said Watson.

This afternoon, organizers reported serving about 1,000 guests. They mentioned these numbers are lower because some individuals can’t reach the location due to the severe cold conditions.

“We also have some coats and mitts that are donated by various people around the city so that people that we notice that are in need, we can make sure that they have the clothing that will keep them warm,” said Watson.

With a significant snowfall on its way in the next 48 hours, staying warm will be a priority for everyone. Many shovels will be out trying to keep sidewalks clear for those who must travel.

An expert also reminds us about potential hazards around homes during this time.

“Icicles are a big red flag,” said Bob Assadourian, owner of Triple R, Inc.

A renovation and repair business owner, Assadourian has witnessed damage from inadequate attic insulation.

“The attic may be improperly sealed. Heat loss, that’s what the key is. You’re spending a lot of money on heat. You don’t want it escaping out the roof creating icicles,” said Assadourian.

The snow accumulating over these 48 hours will eventually melt. That’s why he suggests clearing snow away from homes and piling it away from your foundation-and your neighbor’s too.

“Keep the snow away from your foundation to prevent it from potentially leaking into your basement,” said Assadourian.

If you’re interested in helping Gore Park Community Outreach-they’re looking for companies with unused storage space to keep donations secure during the week. If you can assist, please contact them directly through their website.
