The cold weather alert has concluded, but more snow is on the horizon for Waterloo Region.
A yellow cold weather warning was issued Saturday morning and lifted just before 11 a. m. However, a special weather statement regarding snow for Sunday remains active.
According to Environment Canada, temperatures in the region are still quite low, with wind chills dipping into the minus 20s as of late Saturday morning. Meteorologist Allister Aalders from 570 indicates that Southern Ontario is experiencing some of the chilliest air this season.
“Here in Waterloo Region, -13 C is the daytime high with a wind chill of -19 this afternoon; we drop down to -19 C tonight with a wind chill of -25,” he noted. “Then temperatures will stay around -10 C for highs on Sunday and Monday. Overall, we’re looking at a colder trend as we move toward the end of the month.”
As for the upcoming snowfall, Aalders points out that areas closer to the GTA will receive the most significant amounts; however, our region can expect a fair share as well, particularly affecting Monday morning commutes.
“It will start with scattered flurries on Sunday morning and then transition into steady snow throughout the afternoon, continuing into Sunday night before easing back to flurries overnight into Monday,” he explained.
With these frigid conditions, it’s essential to take precautions since frostbite can occur quickly with exposed skin. If you’re working outdoors, remember to take regular breaks to warm up.
This also means keeping an eye on vulnerable family members and pets during this cold spell.
Some symptoms to be aware of in extreme cold include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness, and changes in color in your fingers or toes.
