Cold warning in place for southwestern Ontario, as temperatures plunge

It’s time to bundle up, southwestern Ontario: Environment Canada has issued a warning for “bitterly cold” conditions from Friday into Saturday morning.

Wind chill values could drop as low as -30 to -33, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h. Daytime temperatures “will remain cold with the brisk winds, followed by falling temperatures this evening,” warns Environment Canada.

A yellow cold warning is in effect for Windsor-Essex, Sarnia Lambton and Chatham-Kent.

While Environment Canada suggests staying indoors whenever possible, some folks still have to work despite the weather.

Sahin Kanwar works at a car wash in Windsor, helping customers clean off snow and salt from their vehicles. He mentioned he was dressed in four layers.

“It’s like super freezing out here,” he said.

Joe Shuttleworth, who installs fibre optic cables on telephone poles, shared that he was wearing “fully insulated gear” along with heavy-duty boots. He tries to keep moving to stay warm too.

He noted he’s experienced colder conditions while working but added, “This is getting pretty cold. Tomorrow will be colder.”

Frostbite Can Occur Quickly

Environment Canada advises everyone to be alert for symptoms related to the cold in themselves and others: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and color changes in extremities.

They also recommend checking on older family members, friends and neighbors while emphasizing that people should dress warmly.

“Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit issued a cold warning on Thursday as well. The City of Windsor has opened extra shelter beds in response. The Downtown Mission has activated its cold weather protocol and is seeking donations for additional support needed during this time.

You can find a list of places to stay warm on the health unit’s webpage. A complete list of emergency shelters and overnight drop-in programs is also available on the city’s website.
