More individuals participated in this federal election compared to four years ago, but it looks like no records will be shattered.

As of 7 a. m. Tuesday, Elections Canada reported a voter turnout of 67.15 percent.

They still need to count some special ballots, which will be done after 9:30 a. m.

Special ballots include those sent by mail or votes cast at an Elections Canada office before Election Day.

Many analysts had predicted record participation following an unprecedented 7.3 million Canadians who voted in advance polls over Easter weekend.

The highest voter turnout for a federal election was recorded in 1958 when 79.4 percent of eligible voters made their choice.

The previous election in 2021 saw only a 62.6 percent turnout.

On the local front, there are still some polls yet to report; however, in Durham, the Oshawa riding has the lowest turnout at 63.38 percent.

Whitby seems to have the highest participation rate at 72.05 percent.

The other Durham ridings are as follows;

York-Durham – 71.08 percent Northumberland-Clarke – 69.27 percent Bowmanville-Oshawa North – 69.11 percent Pickering-Brooklin – 67.68 percent Ajax – 66.81 percent

This story will be updated once all polls are finalized.
