The City of Oshawa has successfully finished all five milestones of the Partners For Climate Protection (PCP) program’s Milestone Framework at both the corporate and community levels.

This is a significant advancement in efforts to cut down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the city.

The PCP program is operated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities along with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI Canada).

The five milestones include:

Milestone 1 – Create a baseline emissions inventory and forecast
Milestone 2 – Set emissions reduction targets
Milestone 3 – Develop a local action plan
Milestone 4 – Implement the local action plan
Milestone 5 – Monitor progress and report results

The city recently completed Milestone 5 through the Teaching City Oshawa partnership at the community level. The Planning Services Branch of the city collaborated with Ontario Tech to achieve this milestone. This effort was led by Dr. Dan Hoornweg, Associate Professor from Ontario Tech’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, along with Energy Engineering student Adam Ristau, and community expert David Wotten. Together, they produced a GHG inventory and summary reports that showcase key metrics, emerging technologies, and chances to lower emissions throughout the city. They describe this work as one of the most thorough GHG inventories globally from a community viewpoint.

As a member of PCP, Oshawa stands among over 500 municipalities across Canada taking initiative and making meaningful contributions toward reducing overall GHG emissions in Canada. These municipalities commit to creating both corporate and community-wide GHG reduction plans while having access to various tools, resources, and guidance.
