Wilfred Charles Grist of New Glasgow passed away peacefully after a short illness on February 28, 2026, at the age of 95.
Born in Westville, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late George and May (Humphries) Grist.
Wilfred started his journey at Ferguson’s Store as a young man, learning early on about hard work and community spirit. After completing his education, he spent 39 years with Maritime Tel and Tel. It was during a phone line repair that he met Helen, the love of his life. They married in 1953 and created a life full of devotion, raising three children with consistent support and guidance while filling their home with love and laughter. Wilf and Helen enjoyed old time dances and took pleasure in the little things together. Wilf had a soft spot for ice skating, taking every chance he got to skate around. His happiest moments were spent at their family cottage in Caribou River, where he made it a point to swim daily; even on his 94th birthday, he celebrated with a swim that showed off his lasting spirit.
He is survived by his sons Ken (Cindy) and Kevin (Charlene), along with his daughter Lauren; his brother Walter; his adored grandchildren Andrea (Colin), Jennifer (Phil), Greg, Christine (Scott), Ash, and Alex; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren Braeden, Norah, Addison, and Elliot.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Helen; sisters Alma (Frank), Daisy (Art), and Lily (George); brothers George and Frank (Jackie); along with his son-in-law Gordon.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Maritime IOOF Recreation Department. We will always be thankful for the love and friendship at The Maples in Antigonish and The Maritime Oddfellows Home along with the exceptional care from Dr. Barclay, Dr. Schnare, and the staff at Aberdeen Hospital.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 7 from 1:00 to 1:50 p. m. at Eagles Funeral Home followed by a funeral service and reception.
