Ontario Tech University in Oshawa is making headlines, achieving a spot in the top 10 in Ontario and 23rd overall in Canada for engineering according to the global Times Higher Education university rankings.

The University of Toronto topped the Canadian list, while Harvard secured the number one position globally in engineering. In fact, American and British universities dominated all 11 categories, led by MIT with three first-place finishes.

Ontario Tech was recognized as the Research University of the Year among Canada’s undergraduate institutions for the third consecutive year in 2025 by Research Infosource. The university received high marks for its ‘research environment’ in the Times Higher Education rankings. “The school’s research performance positions the university as one of Canada’s fastest-rising research powerhouses,” said Ontario Tech Vice-President of Research and Innovation Dr. Les Jacobs last year. He attributed this rise to “strategic investments and a commitment to research that benefits Canadians.”

In addition, Ontario Tech ranked first among undergraduate universities for growth in research income, international research income growth, and two categories related to university partnerships and research. The university also secured second place nationally in three research categories and two AI categories, which includes AI publication counts.

In 2025, Ontario Tech University also achieved a #3 seed within the province while being rated number one across two categories nationally in Macleans’ annual university rankings.

A leader in clean energy on a national scale, Ontario Tech is advancing technologies such as nuclear, hydrogen, battery storage, electrification, wind, solar, and geothermal energy. Moreover, it houses Canada’s first International Atomic Energy Agency Collaborating Centre focusing on small modular reactors. Researchers are exploring future technologies like nano reactors-compact nuclear reactors that could simplify access to nuclear energy for communities across Canada.

This is quite an achievement for a school that just started up in 2002 and welcomed its first group of students only a year later.
