From Feb. 2 to March 6, Ontarians are encouraged to nominate a police officer in their community who has gone above and beyond to keep their city safe.
The Police Association shared that there are five categories for recognition:
• On-Duty Difference Maker – Uniform Officer (a police officer who has exceeded job expectations while on-duty).
• On-Duty Difference Maker – Civilian Police Service Employee (a civilian employee who has surpassed job expectations while on-duty).
• The Extra Mile Award (given for a remarkable act of kindness or bravery performed off duty by either an officer or civilian employee).
• Community Role Model (an officer or civilian employee making a lasting impact in their community during their personal time).

• Police Hero Honour Roll Award (recognizing an officer or civilian employee who has made significant contributions over ten years).
The Police Association of Ontario states that those honored display exceptional courage, compassion, and leadership within Ontario’s police force.
“We’re proud to celebrate more than a decade of the Police Services Hero of the Year Awards program, which recognizes the extraordinary, above-and-beyond work our members do every day. The program continues to give well-deserved recognition to the exceptional service of Ontario’s sworn and civilian police personnel,” said PAO president Mark Baxter.
In Kingston, one past recipient included Sergeant Melanie Jefferies. In 2023 she received the Police Hero Honour Roll award for assisting a victim related to Richard Joyce-a serial kidnapper accused of sexual assault and murder back in the ’90s.

</ pp ;. The victim met with Jefferies back in 2011 after keeping her story hidden for two decades because she thought no one would believe her. However, opening up with Sgt. Melanie Jefferies changed everything for her life journey towards recovery. Now she shares her experience publicly aiming at empowering others. In 2022 when she learned Joyce was attempting for escorted passes out of prison; she reached out once more seeking Jefferies’ support-who provided personal advice whenever needed. The Police Association remarked that Jefferies “is truly professional,” adding “her honour integrity commitment and service towards victims is uncommon.” Nominations will be accepted until March 6 ,2026 , with award recipients being announced during PAO’s Annual General Meeting at May’s president banquet ceremony scheduled on May28 , in Windsor.
