From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The U. S.’s exit ramp from the ongoing war with Iran seemed much further away on Sunday as Israel’s ambassador to the U. S. proclaimed that the war would continue in light of a new series of devastating attacks in Israel.

Israeli and U. S. forces launched strikes aimed at Iranian installations and commanders on February 28, successfully killing Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, in those initial hours.

Since then, progress has come to a halt. The Iranian government appears no closer to falling under pressure from munitions and threats from Western nations. The latest escalation came Saturday when the U. S. president threatened civilian infrastructure within Iran (which would be considered a war crime unless linked directly to military assets). Control over the Strait of Hormuz has become a key goal for Trump’s administration as it struggles for evidence of progress toward what it claims is victory in this war.

On Sunday, Israel’s ambassador in Washington stated that ending this conflict could take much longer than Donald Trump and his administration have suggested, telling CNN that his country would “continue with this campaign until we bring this regime to its knees”.

“We cannot live any more with a country that is malign, that is intent on destroying us,” Michael Leiter told CNN’s Dana Bash.

Leiter went on accusing Iran’s regime of lying about its capabilities regarding its ballistic missile weaponry size and range.

He appeared on CNN’s State of the Union following Iranian attacks across southern Israel on Saturday which injured at least 180 people as Tehran targeted an Israeli nuclear facility. This site, Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center, has long been suspected as where Israel keeps its undeclared nuclear arsenal.

The debate continues over whether Iran might be developing its own similar program again after three nuclear development sites were struck by U. S. and Israeli forces back in 2025. This discussion comes as Trump’s administration tries hard to justify its ongoing conflict with Iran while also outlining future plans.

In those early days of conflict, officials from both U. S. and Israel urged Iranian citizens to rise up against their authoritarian government established since 1969 when an Islamic revolution ousted U. S.-backed dictator Shah of Iran. His successor Ayatollah Khomenei enforced strict cultural laws while maintaining tight control over protests even today.

When mass protests didn’t happen in March as hoped for by officials, talk shifted away from regime change strategies within U. S. circles. However, Israel’s government-pointed out by various U. S officials like Secretary of State Marco Rubio-has shown no signs indicating they plan an exit strategy without seeing total collapse within Tehran’s leadership first.

“The war is not close to ending,” stated Gen. Eyal Zamir head of Israel’s armed forces during remarks made Saturday.

This view starkly contrasts Trump’s statements made via Truth Social later that same day: “We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East with respect to the Terrorist Regime of Iran,” he insisted.

Meanwhile back home in America; both Trump’s allies and opponents are pushing him towards finding an “off-ramp”. Concurrently though; some D. C neoconservatives along older Republicans continue supporting efforts aimed at dismantling what they see as enduring threats posed by longstanding adversaries like Tehran who’ve consistently defied multiple American presidents throughout time periods past.

Trump’s initial term had focused heavily upon addressing issues surrounding relations between both countries first withdrawing participation from Obama-era JCPOA agreement intended mainly around oversight concerning developments related solely towards Irans’ nuclear programs before implementing maximum pressure tactics later resulting ultimately culminating near potential clashes never witnessed prior decades long standing feuds ahead fueled further still following orders resulting assassinations targeting Qassem Soleimani-a former high-ranking member involved within IRGC himself thereafter escalating tensions further.

The fallout stemming now current military engagements appears responsible partly behind rising gas prices surfacing across regions not just inside America but beyond also due primarily attributed actions taken restricting oil shipping movements specifically found flowing through key waterways namely situated within Straits connecting between Oman & Persian Gulf areas pivotal trading routes affecting global markets overall.
