This year has been quite eventful in the Waterloo region. Over the past months, reporters at CBC Kitchener-Waterloo have reported on stories that have influenced our community.

One major story has been the ongoing legal dispute regarding a regional lot that turned into an encampment at Weber Street and Victoria Street in Kitchener.

The region enacted a new bylaw for this site, requiring residents to vacate the encampment by December 1 so Metrolinx can begin track work early next year for a new transit hub. However, the case is still being heard by a judge in Kitchener and is set to return to court in February.

A missing person investigation involving Eli Wood has drawn significant attention due to its unusual nature. The 25-year-old was living in a unit behind a house in Kitchener and hasn’t been seen by friends or family since his home was consumed by fire on October 19.

Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) investigators stated that the fire was arson, indicating it was intentional and suggesting foul play might be involved in Wood’s disappearance. The police are continuing their investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward.

CBC K-W’s Joe Pavia shared an intriguing story about a mystery man who places a flag on the front lawn of a home every Remembrance Day. He successfully identified this man and connected him with the homeowner.

Weather events also made headlines this year, with major snowstorms hitting in February and November along with intense heat waves during summer.

Mystery man places flag and salutes Kitchener home on Remembrance Day

A family from Kitchener is trying to uncover who has been planting flags on their front lawn every Remembrance Day. The owner of their Second World War-era home captured footage of the event this year using their security camera. The video appears to show a man dressed like a soldier using a cane as he places the flag down before saluting.

In March, Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, who previously attended the University of Waterloo, received an 11-year prison sentence after pleading guilty for his role in a stabbing incident during gender-studies class back in 2023. Although he wasn’t charged with terrorism, the judge described his actions as “a particularly grave hate crime.”

This year also saw two elections take place. A snap provincial election held in February resulted in little change locally, with all MPPs keeping their seats.

The most notable shift happened in Wellington-Halton Hills where Progressive Conservative candidate Joseph Racinsky took over Ted Arnott’s position after Arnott chose not to run again following 34 years of service.

The federal election held in May brought changes locally too; Conservative candidates flipped several seats including MP Matt Strauss winning over Liberal incumbent Valerie Bradford in Kitchener South-Hespeler, MP Connie Cody overtaking Liberal Bryan May in Cambridge, and MP Kelly De Ridder defeating Green incumbent Mike Morrice for Kitchener Centre.

Meanwhile, Waterloo MP Bardish Chagger and Kitchener-Conestoga MP Tim Louis maintained their positions as Liberals while Dominique O’Rourke secured Guelph’s seat for her party after former MP Lloyd Longfield opted out of re-election.

While many other stories emerged throughout the year, here are CBC K-W’s top ten based on page views:

1. ‘I’m hoping for a miracle’: Breslau neighbours face $14K bill each for old sewer work

Breslau residents were taken aback when they received letters stating they needed to pay nearly $14,000 per household for water and sewer work done on their street ten years ago back in November.

Twenty-five properties along Scheifele Place, Woolwich Street South, Dolman Street, and Joseph Street received correspondence dated October 27 from Woolwich Township asking each household to cover $13,950.19 towards total project costs amounting to $348,754.75.

After expressing concerns at township council meetings, residents were granted more time to settle up without interest if they chose to enter into a twenty-year payment plan.

2. Justin and Hailey Bieber draw excitement while exploring local shops

In September , Cambridge enjoyed some extra buzz when pop star Justin Bieber along with his wife Hailey decided to visit various local businesses around town , sharing photos online.Hailey & Justin Bieber enjoying Monigram Coffee during downtown Cambridge visit. (Monigram Coffee/Instagram)

For many locals , it wasn ’ t just another celebrity sighting (although it isn’t entirely surprising since they own property nearby).

Cambridge Coun. Scott Hamilton noted how having famous visitors like them benefiting small businesses means “it’s not every day one of history ’ s best-selling music artists comes through your city.”

“It reminds us we’re all connected regardless of background,” Hamilton expressed. “We frequent similar stores , dine at common eateries , which creates shared experiences highlighting our local community spirit. Having international stars support our shops serves as proof our city truly stands out.”

3. Local man detained overseas risks serious jail time due to Amazon walkie-talkies

Kitchener’s Peter Pal Jola found himself arrested upon arrival at an airport located within Ethiopia while returning supplies back home toward South Sudan after being stopped because he had walkie-talkies packed away-devices prohibited under Ethiopian law.

Peter pal Jola detained following arrival into Addis Ababa accused importing “military equipment” though family claims said items were merely basic walkie-talkies purchased online via Amazon.(Provided Nyarieni Pal)

The family states that Peter remains locked up post appearing before court last October causing them concern about health issues-he is diabetic suffers suspected kidney tumor needs cane mobility due car accident resulting broken femur last year causing additional worry ; meanwhile family covers food care expenses incurred while incarcerated.

4.’You don’t realize Canada’s vastness’: Man rides motorcycle all way Tuktoyaktuk
