Police in Windsor-Essex have an important reminder for drivers following a spike in accidents on Wednesday caused by snowy weather.
“Please slow down and leave room between you and the vehicle ahead of you,” the OPP said in a social media post. “Don’t wait until it is too late to slow down and end up with a damaged vehicle, in the ditch, waiting for hours to get help or worse injured.”
Essex County OPP report that they are dealing with “multiple vehicles in the ditch” due to worsening road and weather conditions.
Windsor police also mentioned they are responding to a “high volume” of calls about crashes.
“Snow, ice, and reduced visibility are making road conditions unpredictable and dangerous,” the police service stated on social media on Wednesday afternoon.
The police advised considering delaying any non-essential travel.
“Please use caution, plan ahead, and help keep our roads safe for everyone this winter,” the police service added.
As of around 5:45 p. m., eastbound Hwy. 401 is closed at Queen’s Line near Tilbury due to a jack-knifed tractor trailer, according to OPP. Thankfully, no one was injured.
Windsor saw some snowfall on Wednesday afternoon, with more expected soon.
Environment Canada forecasts an additional two to four centimetres may fall Wednesday night.
There will also be winds gusting up to 50 km/h along with a low temperature of -8 C.
Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent are bracing for much heavier snowfall and are under snow squall advisories from Environment Canada.

This is how Windsor manages its plow services
The City of Windsor focuses on clearing E. C. Row Expressway first, followed by arterial and collector roads for salting and snow removal. These busy areas get plowed as soon as it starts snowing. Residential streets will be cleared when snow accumulation exceeds 10 centimetres. The city also offers an interactive map showing plow activity. WATCH | Take a look at a Windsor salt dome:
