Kyle Cronk believes he may have unintentionally interrupted a robbery on Sept. 2 when he confronted two of four suspects who tied up tellers with zip ties during an attempted armed robbery at the Libro Credit Union, located on Talbot Street in St. Thomas.
A retired sergeant from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and now owner of K. W. C. Paralegal Services, Mr. Cronk also reported being struck in the side of the head by a third suspect and threatened with what looked like a gun by a fourth suspect, before they escaped in a silver or grey Honda compact recreational vehicle (CRV).
No one else was hurt, and St. Thomas Police Service (STPS) stated that the suspects spent about five minutes inside the bank, but no cash or property was taken.
“After learning that the robbers didn’t get anything, I hope my actions served as a distraction that kept them away from the hardworking employees at the bank,” Mr. Cronk said in an interview on Sept. 5. “I’m relieved that only I got hurt, but I know this will be traumatic for those working there.”
An STPS statement revealed that police responded to 911 calls made by both an employee and a customer (Mr. Cronk mentioned he called police), reporting an active robbery at a financial institution at 1073 Talbot Street. However, by the time officers arrived, the suspects had already fled westward in a CRV parked on the south side of the credit union.
“Four males, described as black or dark-complexioned and believed to be in their late teens to early 20s, entered the establishment and restrained several employees,” police stated. “One suspect was seen wielding what appeared to be a firearm.”
According to the police report, suspect No. 1 wore red sweatpants, a red Nike sweatshirt, white shoes, black gloves, sunglasses, and a black balaclava while armed with a firearm. Suspect No. 2 donned a black sweater with an emblem on its left side, blue pants, black balaclava, and blue or black gloves.
Suspect No. 3 was similarly dressed in a black sweater and pants along with white gloves while carrying a “Scarface” bag. Suspect No. 4 had on a black sweater paired with blue pants and blue gloves.
The investigation is ongoing as police seek public help in identifying these suspects.
With his eye swollen shut from injury, Mr. Cronk spoke with Aylmer Express while looking through images of suspects shared online by STPS.
“I walked in at around 4 p. m., ready to deposit my company check into my trust account when suddenly this guy bursts out through the inside door right into me,” Mr. Cronk recalled. “He jumped around slightly; it took me some seconds to process because I could hear shouting coming from within the bank-my instinct kicked in to grab him.”
“I grabbed him firmly and brought him down onto the ground,” Mr. Cronk continued. “Then another guy came out; now I’ve got hold of two of them thinking if I can just keep them here until someone comes to assist.”
“Then I got hit hard on my side by this third guy,” he added swiftly about his encounter with violence while trying to contain them all together for safety’s sake.
“The fourth man rushed out after that; I’m not certain if he had his gun drawn,” he recounted as he demonstrated how he saw this last assailant holding something close against himself. “I could see part of it but couldn’t tell if it was aimed at me,” adding further detail about how unsettling that moment felt for him then realizing afterwards what transpired altogether instead wishing he’d witnessed video footage for better clarity since everything remains somewhat foggy in memory.”
