A 32-year-old man from Walpole Island First Nation has been charged in what marks Lambton County’s first homicide of the year.
The Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia has confirmed that Cody Roegiest faces charges of second-degree murder, firing a weapon with intent, and unauthorized firearm possession.
Roegiest was taken into custody on New Year’s Day after police from Lambton OPP and Walpole Island responded to a reported disturbance involving a gun on Squirrel Island Road.
Upon arrival, officers found a 29-year-old man with visible gunshot wounds, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, police stated that one person had been arrested without any issues. However, since the first news update, OPP have not released further information regarding the identities of either the victim or the suspect.
The Ontario Court of Justice announced that Roegiest is set to appear in Sarnia court again on Friday, January 9 for a bail hearing.
