Winning the U11C title at the recent Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships was a thrill for the Saugeen Shores Storm U11C teams, sponsored by Global Pet Foods.
Being celebrated with a parade – featuring fire trucks, a local tradition – through Port Elgin and then receiving appreciation certificates from the mayor added to the excitement. The U11C Storm went undefeated in five games at the April 14 championships, winning key matches against two opponents that they struggled to beat during regular season tournament play. The storm had a close 3-2 win in their first game. Game two was a solid 7-3 victory, and they wrapped up pool play with a strong 6-1 win. In semi-final action, the U11C Storm secured a 4-2 win to advance to the finals. In a social media game report, Amy Doherty mentioned that moving to the larger ice surface and adapting to a 12-12-15 minute format for the championship game might have been overwhelming for some teams.
“But our Storm girls were more than prepared for the additional challenge and pressure; months of practice had our girls well-conditioned to keep their energy-levels high while maintaining the mental grit that was needed to action the coaches’ game-winning strategy,” Doherty said in the post.
