ST. THOMAS, ONT. – Power Co Canada has announced it has awarded two significant contracts for the $7 billion St. Thomas gigafactory, with agreements established for both structural steel and foundations for the project’s first cell production building and essential works.
While specific dollar amounts weren’t revealed, Steelcon Group of Companies will handle the structural steel work, and Magil Construction Canada Inc. was chosen for the foundations.
This milestone prepares the site for groundbreaking in the next few weeks, according to a release, marking another step forward for Canada’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility. The factory alone will cover an area equivalent to 210 football fields. The entire industrial park will stretch over 850 football fields.
The gigafactory is set to have six production blocks with a potential output of up to 90 gigawatt hours – enough to power around one million EVs each year, as noted on the project website.
Regarding the latest contracts, Steelcon will employ 500 workers in their production facilities dedicated to fabricating the steel for this project. At peak times onsite, about 100 workers will be involved in installing the steel. Over 30 workers are expected to come from nearby London and southwestern Ontario.

“We are proud to partner with Power Co Canada to build the St. Thomas gigafactory, a project that embodies the future of Canadian industry,” said Danny Bianco, president at Steelcon Group of Companies, in a statement. “Our team of skilled Canadian fabricators is ready to deliver, and we are especially proud to contribute to a project that will support significant local employment and drive economic growth here in Ontario.”
According to Power Co, Magil Construction Canada Inc’s foundation work represents one of the largest foundation packages ever in southwestern Ontario. It involves constructing foundations for three buildings that together total a floor area of 850,000 square feet.
MAGIL – Magil Construction Canada Inc. was contracted for the foundations with one of the largest foundation packages to date in southwestern Ontario. It includes construction of foundations for three buildings, encompassing a total floor area of 850,000 square feet.
The first concrete pour is expected within weeks. There’ll be about 32,500 cubic metres of concrete used during this phase along with over 500,000 square feet of formwork.
This announcement comes after Power Co launched its recruitment campaign aiming to fill hundreds of positions at the gigafactory this year. Once fully operational, this plant will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs throughout the region as stated in their release.
Power Co SE was established by Volkswagen in 2022 specifically focused on leading battery cell production globally. They plan three gigafactories – including St. Thomas Gigafactory – with two already under construction.
