S. envoys visit Zelenskiy after Moscow discussionsAmerican envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy after their talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. As reported by Reuters, the three-hour meeting in Moscow didn’t yield any significant public breakthroughs. The Kyiv visit is part of Washington's latest attempt to seek a resolution to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. Why it matters: Diplomatic meetings don’t equal a ceasefire. Readers should look for solid commitments or battlefield changes rather than viewing these gatherings as signs that peace is imminent.Tensions rise between U. S. and Iran over military actionsThe relationship between Washington and Tehran has soured again following Iran’s claim of launching ballistic missiles at two U. S. Navy vessels while the United States military announced strikes against three Iranian oil tankers. The crews were evacuated without reported injuries during this incident. Claims from both governments should be regarded as such until verified independently. Why it matters: Any further disturbances near the Persian Gulf or Strait of Hormuz could impact global shipping and oil markets. Ultimately, Canadian consumers might feel this through increased fuel prices or airline costs, although specifics regarding timing or extent remain uncertain.Israeli attacks in Lebanon leave four deadThe health ministry in Lebanon reported that four individuals were killed and six others injured due to Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Sunday. Israel stated that these strikes were a response to drone attacks from Hezbollah targeting weapon storage sites. The president of Lebanon described the strikes as a serious escalation. Not all military claims have been independently confirmed yet. Why it matters: These exchanges complicate an already fragile June ceasefire and heighten the risk of broader regional conflict.Anak Krakatau eruption impacts Indonesian flightsAn eruption at Anak Krakatau forced authorities to halt operations at six airports including Jakarta's main airport. A total of 301 flights were affected by ash rising up to 50,000 feet high-58 of which were international flights. No tsunami alert was issued when this report was made; Indonesia raised the volcano's alert level to three. Why it matters: Canadians traveling through Southeast Asia should stay updated with airlines about flight statuses since cancellations can happen quickly due to changing conditions.National NewsCanada set to implement counter-tariffs TuesdayStarting at 12:01 a. m. on Tuesday, September 8th, Canada will impose counter-tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on certain American goods. The Department of Finance noted that these measures will affect $27.6 billion worth of imports across sectors like steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper products as well as electronics-matching U. S tariffs placed on Canadian items. Why it matters: Businesses importing affected items must review federal tariff lists along with their supply contracts now. Consumers might notice higher prices depending on inventory levels and whether retailers pass increased costs onto them or not.August sees loss of 42K jobs across CanadaA total drop of 42 thousand jobs occurred last month (0.2%), while national unemployment rates held steady at 6.4%, according Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey data release. The overall employment rate dipped by 0.1 percentage points down to 60.8 percent , while manufacturing managed an addition of 22 thousand positions ; losses were evident elsewhere such as business services , public administration , natural resources , utilities. Why it matters : The results indicate a weakening labor market despite unchanged unemployment figures. The Bank Rate remains unchanged at two point five percent whilst deposits hold steady also at two point twenty percent. Why It Matters : Borrowers relying upon variable-rate loans gain no immediate benefit nor detriment from this decision.
