Our dear Jay passed into God’s loving care on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the Sault Area Hospital with his wife by his side.

He was a devoted husband to The Rev. Susan Montague-Koyle and a loving father to Stephen and Kevin. He was the cherished son of Irene Koyle and the late Donald Koyle. He is also survived by his sister, Julie Koyle (London, Ontario). Anyone who knew Jay understood how much he adored his best friend and furry companion, Chanel. Many extended family members and friends, along with those from St. Luke’s Cathedral congregation and the broader diocesan community, will miss him deeply.

Susan will always remember his kind heart, unique sense of humor, and unwavering love for family and friends.

Jay was ordained as a priest in 1987 in the Diocese of Huron where he took on various roles in parish leadership, theological education, and church life. In 2010, he moved from the Diocese of Huron to the Diocese of Algoma where he initially served as the Congregational Development Officer before becoming the Executive Archdeacon. In 2024, he became the Dean of Algoma and Incumbent at St. Luke’s Cathedral, bringing deep pastoral care, intellectual curiosity, and strong leadership skills to this role.

In addition to his cathedral work, Jay held positions as Provost and Director of the School of Theology at Thorneloe University where he made significant contributions to theological education and leadership within the Anglican Church of Canada. He was well-respected as a liturgical scholar and teacher known for his expertise in liturgy, preaching, and congregational renewal.

Jay earned a Doctor of Ministry in Homiletics from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary; a Master of Arts in Theology (Liturgical Studies) from the University of Notre Dame; a Master of Divinity from Huron University College; and an Honours Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Western University.

Throughout his ministry journey, Jay contributed greatly to teaching, writing, and participating in national and international groups focused on liturgical life and renewal. He was part of Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission; North American Academy of Liturgy; Societas Liturgica; International Anglican Liturgical Consultation; serving as Chair for Faith, Worship, and Ministry for Anglican Church Canada from 2016 to 2019.

Those who had the pleasure to know Jay saw him as a talented preacher, a thoughtful theologian, and a caring pastor. His warmth, humanity, and love for church life enriched every community he worked with along with many studentsand colleagues who were lucky enough to learn alongside him.

As we entrust Jay into God’s eternal care, we express our gratitude for all doctors, nurses, and loved ones that surrounded him during his final days.
