Months after a father of four was shot and killed in front of his family during a home invasion in Vaughan, Ont., local police have announced arrests and charges related to the incident.

According to officers, one of the suspects, who is charged with first-degree murder, was out on bail at the time. Additionally, a 16-year-old boy is currently wanted in connection with the case.

Four others have also been charged, including two young suspects.

The charges arose from a call that York Regional Police received around 1 a. m. on Aug. 31, reporting that a home invasion was happening as a group of suspects forced their way through the back door.

Police stated that the group arrived in a stolen vehicle, and one individual had a firearm.

Investigators noted that 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi confronted the intruders and was subsequently shot and killed. Authorities believe the home was “specifically targeted” for robbery.

Farooqi had four children aged four to 17 years old. He lived at home with his wife as well.

Police confirmed earlier that Farooqi’s family members were present during the invasion and shooting but did not provide details about their locations or how close they were at that moment.

This past Wednesday afternoon, more than two months into their investigation, York Regional Police confirmed they had made some arrests while others remain outstanding.

Insp. Paolo Fiore from York Regional Police’s homicide unit mentioned that the investigation has been complex.

“Through their commitment and professionalism, investigators have identified a group of individuals who are now alleged to be responsible for this tragic act,” Fiore said.

The police obtained search warrants for three homes located in Toronto and Mississauga which they searched on Nov. 10. After these searches, several arrests were made.

Mohammad Amir Wiam Abuhmaid, a 26-year-old from Mississauga, has been charged with first-degree murder. He faces additional charges including breaking and entering with intent, robbery using a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and breach of probation.

The police noted he was on bail under four different conditions at that time.

“There are four separate forms of release that he was out in the community on,” Fiore stated. “The offences vary in severity; because these matters are before the courts I’m not going to get into specifics about each case but it’s concerning when something like this occurs.”

A 16-year-old boy is still being sought by authorities; he is believed to be avoiding police somewhere within the Greater Toronto Area. This youth is wanted for multiple alleged offences including first-degree murder and armed robbery.

“We believe he’s still in the GTA; his whereabouts are unknown,” Fiore said.
