When one door closes, another opens-even if it’s just for a little while.

A Toronto-based company has recently announced plans to temporarily occupy a vacant store in a bustling Burlington mall and create a roller rink.

SUSO Skate Co., which specializes in pop-up roller rinks, turns empty retail spaces into lively community hubs. Founded by the husband-and-wife duo Henry O’Brien and Janine Bartels in 2021, this venture began at The Bentway in Toronto and has since spread throughout the GTA, taking over spots like Bramalea City Centre, Oshawa Centre, Cambridge Centre, Promenade Shopping Centre, CF Shops at Don Mills, and Cloverdale Mall.

Oshawa Centre

SUSO recently announced it will bring a rink to the former Decathlon location at Mapleview Shopping Centre (900 Maple Ave).

The French sporting goods retailer Decathlon shut down all five of its stores in the GTA last year.

The SUSO pop-up currently at Oshawa Centre will be closing soon, with the final skate scheduled for January 25. Following that, the Mapleview pop-up is set to open on February 12, and reservations are already available, according to O’Brien speaking with Your City Within.

In keeping with traditional roller rinks, these pop-ups feature vibrant lighting and music to set the atmosphere. They also host themed nights such as Soca Saturday, Seventies Sunday, and Walkman Wednesday.

“Our mission is a simple one – get people active and having fun with friends and family while reducing the amount of time they spend on their digital devices,” SUSO states on their website.

So far, their pop-ups have attracted over 100,000 skaters as reported by O’Brien.

He also mentioned that SUSO has introduced a mobile skate van that collaborates with BIAs and municipal recreation departments to offer free skate rentals in communities across southern Ontario.

The new Burlington pop-up will operate from Wednesday through Sunday with sessions available for all ages as well as adults.

Admission for adults including skate rental starts at $18; there are other membership options for frequent skaters. Skaters can also ask about hosting private events.
