Beat Schraner
With heavy hearts, we share the news of Beat Thomas Schraner’s passing. On the evening of September 29, 2025, he proudly drove his tractor from his cherished farm on Strader Hill. Sadly, he did not come back. He was 79.
Loving husband of the late Annemarie Schraner (Bächli). Proud Papi to Thomas Schraner (Grace), Judith Schraner (Jonathan), Susanna Bretzler (Jürgen), and Victor Schraner (Lauren). Caring Grossvati to Alexandra (Samuel), Dominik, Oliver, Maya, Sofie, and Stéfanie. He is survived by his two brothers Anton and Viktor (Christine), along with his brothers-in-law Julius Bächli (late Elvira) and Arnold (Rösli) from Switzerland. He was predeceased by his parents Viktor and Alice Schraner (nee Steinacher) and his brothers Urs, Felix, and Werner.
Beat was born in Sulz Valley, Switzerland on May 27, 1946. As a child, he worked hard alongside his four brothers on their small dairy farm. Stories of manual labor, daily church visits, cousins’ gatherings, school friendships, and cycling filled his youth memories that he loved to share. In May of 1970, he married Annemarie and shortly after moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake where they both fell in love with Canada. Although they briefly returned to Switzerland in the mid-seventies, Beat made his permanent move with his young family to Canada in 1977 before settling in Williamsburg in December 1978.
Together with Annemarie, Beat put in tremendous effort to grow their beloved farm. His pride lay in caring for his well-kept dairy cows (Bemar Holsteins) and managing the fields. He never lost sight of his dream to own a vineyard in Niagara. After an accident required amputation of one foot preventing him from milking cows any longer, he sold the dairy herd and transitioned into cash crop farming. Farming was more than just a passion; it was everything to him. In later years he became a dedicated caretaker for Annemarie during her illness until she passed three years ago. Afterward, he took time to travel and reconnect with friends worldwide while always making new acquaintances along the way. He remained committed to staying connected with both old friends and new ones alike.
He kept busy maintaining the farm’s cleanliness while tending to gardens and fruit trees that made him very proud during harvest time-sharing bountiful produce with neighbors, friends, and family alike brought him joy as well as spending quality moments listening or giving advice to kids and grandkids when they visited him at home or online! His card-playing group held a special place in heart because social connections mattered greatly for him throughout life!
