Earlier this month, we learned about a significant corruption investigation within the Toronto police force. Officers were allegedly working with drug traffickers and sharing information that led to shootings. Seven officers and one retired constable have been arrested, while two additional officers have faced suspension. This situation has sparked discussions about consequences for those arrested and a provincewide look into corruption in policing. It feels like a good moment to revisit recent cases of alleged police misconduct right here in Peterborough.
Three Peterborough Police officers arrested on criminal charges in the last two years
by Gabe Pollock Since 2024, three Peterborough Police officers have faced arrest on criminal charges. One case has been resolved while the other two remain ongoing, with one officer currently on paid suspension and another assigned to administrative tasks. Peterborough Currents is providing an update on all three cases and has reached out to police for comments.Mackenzie Rogers
After a six-month investigation, Constable Mackenzie Rogers was taken into custody by the Ontario Provincial Police in September 2024. He faces charges related to possession of stolen property valued over $5,000 and two counts of breach of trust. Court documents obtained by The indicate that Rogers reportedly shared sensitive police information twice over nearly a year and had possession of a stolen vehicle for most of 2023.

A seven-year veteran of the force, Rogers served as a special constable at the courthouse before moving to his role as a constable in the Community FIRST unit, which handles property crimes locally.
Peterborough Police Chief Stuart Betts commented at the time of Rogers’ arrest saying, “As Chief of Police, this is difficult and disappointing news to have to share with the community. I also recognize that this is an extremely difficult day for everyone in our Organization, and for the community to learn that someone in a position of trust has been arrested and charged criminally.”
After his arrest, Rogers was placed on paid suspension. According to public salary disclosures from 2024, he earned an annual salary of $123,472.
The latest court appearance for Rogers was earlier this month; he’s expected to enter his plea at Cobourg courthouse in June.
Anonymous intimate partner violence case
Just days after Rogers’ arrest came news that another officer from Peterborough had been arrested linked to an incident involving intimate partner violence. This officer was charged with mischief under $5,000. Information regarding this case is limited due to its sensitive nature; typically in such incidents within Ontario both parties’ names are kept private unless there’s public safety concerns involved. We do know Chief Betts stated then that “this matter is in no way related to the officer’s duties” and they were temporarily reassigned away from regular duties. The charge for “mischief” usually refers to actions interfering with someone else’s property or causing damage. The status update provided by a spokesperson noted that this matter “was resolved in a court in a different jurisdiction in 2024.” Following its conclusion, appropriate actions were taken concerning the officer according to provisions outlined by the CSPA [Community Safety and Policing Act], which affects their personnel record.Ethan Mamers
Petersburg began 2026 witnessing an investigation leading up to the arrest of officer Ethan Mamers from their police department who faced charges related specifically around careless discharge of firearm use. Mamers has now shifted towards administrative roles pending further legal proceedings set ahead on May 5th when he will appear again before court officials regarding these allegations made against him previously mentioned above alongside Officer Roger’s ongoing situation still facing potential outcomes down judicial paths too!
