A third screening line will be in operation by June at the pre-boarding checkpoint

THUNDER BAY – This year, passing through security at Thunder Bay Airport during busy travel times should be a bit easier.

The airport has shared its plans to expand the current pre-board checkpoint to enhance passenger movement and efficiency.

Work is set to start later this month to increase the size of the checkpoint so that it can handle a third screening line.

Construction is expected to wrap up by June.

Airport officials say that boosting the screening capacity will “meaningfully improve” the passenger experience.

This project is being done in partnership with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority.

“This has been a long, collaborative process.. and we’re proud of the project we’ve brought forward,” said TJ Ahvenniemi, director of facilities, environment and sustainability for Thunder Bay Airport. “It directly improves the passenger experience while addressing capacity issues as flight and passenger volumes continue to grow.”

CATSA spokesperson Rhoda Boyd mentioned that the agency appreciates its ongoing collaboration with the airport as both organizations work together to enhance security screening services for travelers.

The expansion of the screening area won’t immediately include CT X-ray technology, which CATSA is implementing gradually at airports nationwide.

This technology allows passengers to keep electronics like laptops, medical devices, and allowed liquids, aerosols, and gels (100 m L or less) in their carry-on bags.

Thunder Bay is among those airports set to receive this equipment in due time.
