Environment Canada has issued a yellow level wind warning for Windsor, Leamington and Essex County, advising people that strong winds that may cause damage are expected.

In the warning, issued just after 1 p. m., the federal agency said local power outages are possible and driving conditions will likely be difficult.

The agency said high-sided vehicles “will be pushed around by the wind. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible.” People should “secure loose objects,” Environment Canada warned.

In a special weather statement earlier on Friday, the agency said heavy westerly or southwesterly gusts are expected throughout the day and could reach upwards of 70 to 90 km/h at times.

The special weather statement includes Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton.

The federal weather agency says the winds are expected to ease off overnight and that isolated utility power outages are possible as the system rips across our region.

Strong winds are expected Friday into Saturday across the region including Pelee Island. ERCA has issued an advisory as a result. (Essex Region Conservation Authority)

Along Lake Erie – including Pelee Island – the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has put in place what’s referred to as a Shoreline Conditions Statement.

It says while lake levels are lower compared to previous years, there is still a concern for some damage with direct wave impact on shoreline structures and debris being thrown. There also remains some risk of flooding and accelerated nearshore erosion along the Lake Erie shoreline including south Pelee Island as a result of increased wave activity.

Residents are encouraged to avoid areas where flooding is occurring, as well as rivers, streams and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events.
