Authorities in Guelph are looking into a theft where a refrigerated trailer loaded with $80,000 worth of whipped cream was taken from a business earlier this week.

The incident occurred around 4:30 a. m. on Wednesday close to Speedvale Avenue W., near Woolwich Street.

The Wabash refrigerated trailer was hitched up and driven away, containing 30 pallets of Gay Lea-branded whipped cream inside.

Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey mentioned that officials can’t guess if the thief was after the trailer or the whipped cream itself.

“We won’t know for sure what the motive was,” Tracey told . “Even if this person knew what was inside the trailer.. the trailer in this case is valued at approximately $50,000 on its own.”

A representative for Gay Lea Foods confirmed to that both the trailer and cream were stolen from their facility at 21 Speedvale Avenue W.

“We are co-operating fully with law enforcement authorities and supporting their efforts to resolve the matter,” said Robin Redstone, director of communications for Gay Lea Foods.

Not your typical butter thefts

In recent years, Guelph, Brantford, and Waterloo region have experienced an uptick in butter thefts.

One case back in April led to five people being charged after more than $8,000 worth of butter and ghee were stolen from grocery stores in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo.

Almost exactly one year ago, Guelph police issued warnings about seven “large-scale” butter thefts over a span of ten months.

Police in Guelph, Ont., say there have been seven ‘large-scale’ butter thefts over the last 10 months, including two in October. The most recent cases resulted in losses of more than $900 each.

However, Tracey pointed out that this theft is different from those previous butter incidents.

“I think this one differs from the butter theft. They were going into stores and specifically stealing that. In this case, we don’t know whether they were targeting it because of what the product was or it just happened that they stole the trailer and ended up with $80,000 in whipped cream,” Tracey explained.

Police are urging anyone with information to reach out to Const. Jonathan Schleen at 519-824-1212, ext. 7570 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
