Provincial police in Elgin County have charged a Southwold man who used to work at a St. Thomas elementary school after an investigation into an alleged incident of sexual luring.
Elgin County OPP announced the charges Wednesday afternoon, alleging that a 59-year-old man engaged in sexual misconduct and charging him with two counts each of communicating with anyone for the purpose of obtaining sexual services, as well as communicating with someone under 18 years old for the same reason.
The London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB) has confirmed that the man previously worked at one of its elementary schools.
In a letter to parents shared with , the school board stated that the accused “was in our school through a third party (not as a LDCSB employee).”
Police started their investigation after being called to a Southwold Township address following reports of an incident. They noted there are two victims, both of whom were known to the accused.
Authorities expressed concerns that there may be other victims yet unknown to them, police said.
The OPP urged any potential victims to reach out to officers and local support resources for assistance.
The accused was held for bail, according to police; however, they have not provided details on when his next court appearance is scheduled.
While investigations continue, the LDCSB advised parents against speculation “especially on social media.”
The board encourages anyone with information to contact the OPP and emphasized that “safety is of paramount importance to all of us here at our school and the London District Catholic School Board.”
