Winning the U11C title at the recent Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships was a thrill for the Saugeen Shores Storm U11C teams, sponsored by Global Pet Foods.
Being celebrated with a parade – featuring fire trucks, a town tradition – through Port Elgin and then receiving appreciation certificates from the mayor added to the excitement. The U11C Storm went undefeated in five games at the April 14 championships, winning important games against two opponents that they couldn’t beat during regular season tournament play. The Storm had a 3-2 win in their first game. Game two was a 7-3 victory, and they finished pool play with a solid 6-1 win. In semi-final action, the U11C Storm secured a 4-2 win to move on to the finals. In a social media game report, Amy Doherty noted that moving to the larger ice surface and adopting a 12-12-15 minute format for the championship game might have been overwhelming for another team.
“But our Storm girls were more than prepared for the additional challenge and pressure; months of practice had our girls well-conditioned to keep their energy-levels high while maintaining the mental grit that was needed to action the coaches’ game-winning strategy,” Doherty said in her post.
