Wiarton Willie, Ontario’s famous groundhog known for predicting spring’s arrival, has passed away.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula released a statement saying that Willie died peacefully in his sleep.

The town noted that Willie was a key part of the Groundhog Day celebrations in Wiarton, which drew thousands of visitors every year.

According to tradition, if a groundhog sees its shadow there will be six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring is expected.

This year on Groundhog Day, Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow.

Willie had taken over from previous groundhogs who had passed away over time. The town mentioned it will start looking for a new weather predictor now.

“Willie brought people together in the heart of winter to celebrate a tradition that put Wiarton on the map,” Mayor Jay Kirkland said in a statement.

“While we are saddened by the passing, we are grateful for the memories created and the pride brought to our town. Willie will always hold a special place in the story of South Bruce Peninsula.”

This report by The Canadian Press was first March 10, 2026.
