Update: Around 12:30 p. m., OPP announced that Highway 11 is shut down in both directions from Longlac to Hearst because of harsh weather and low visibility.

Original story follows.

A winter storm has led to highway closures in Ontario on Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a winter storm warning yesterday for areas in northwest Ontario.

The storm was anticipated to hit Tuesday night and wrap up by Thursday in Thunder Bay, Chapleau, Wawa, Timmins, and Moosonee.

On Wednesday, Environment Canada reported that heavy snow had moved into Northern Ontario with some regions expecting up to 60 cm by Thursday night.

The Ontario Provincial Police informed the public that highways were closed on Wednesday.

Highway 655 was closed in both directions between Kidd Creek Mine Rd and Highway 11 in Timmins, according to the OPP’s post on X on Wednesday morning.

Highway 11 is fully closed between Western Avenue in Cochrane and Riverside Drive in Kapuskasing due to severe weather conditions and poor visibility, as stated by the OPP.

The police advised drivers to refrain from traveling through these areas unless it’s absolutely necessary.

There could be more road closures ahead.

Huron County, Port Elgin, Mount Forest, Kitchener, and Guelph may experience snowfall ranging from 30 to 50 cm starting Thursday morning and possibly lasting until Saturday.
