A 54-year-old man has passed away following an “unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill on Wednesday, and police have made an arrest, according to York Regional Police.

The incident took place outside on Lorraine Street, close to Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road E., as stated by Duty Insp. Ken Golding, spokesperson for York Regional Police.

Police received a call about an assault shortly before 5 p. m.

Upon arrival, officers found the man suffering from serious injuries. York Regional Paramedics transported him in life-threatening condition to a hospital, where he was declared dead shortly after.

Golding mentioned that authorities still don’t know where the victim resided. His identity has not been released as police need to inform next of kin first.

Incident ‘involved 2 strangers,’ say police

The suspect was apprehended nearby. Golding indicated that there are no other suspects being sought at this time. The name of the arrested person hasn’t been disclosed yet, and details about any charges are still pending.

“At this time, it appears that the attack was unprovoked and it was between two strangers,” Golding told reporters near the scene.

Golding reassured that there is no threat to public safety but advised residents to expect a significant police presence in the area. The homicide unit is handling the investigation and forensic identification services are currently on-site, he added.

Officers were canvassing the area on Wednesday night for witnesses and looking for any surveillance or dashboard camera footage that might help in their inquiry.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are encouraged to reach out to police or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
