After spending nine years on the Whitby waterfront, Town Brewery is making the move downtown.
The brewery, which started with a mission to craft better beer and foster community connections, will now be situated in Whitby’s downtown area. This announcement came on Friday, revealing they will be taking over the former Brock Street Brewing and 12welve Bistro spot at 244 Brock St. S.
“We began this adventure over nine years ago with a clear aim – to build a business we could take pride in. One that would create great products and provide a space for people to gather. To quote our initial business plan, ‘we want to be a fixture in the community,’” shared general manager and co-founder Jeff Talmey on the brewery’s social media channels. “Finally, we have a place that feels like home in the heart of the town that has supported us from day one. Without our community’s backing, this opportunity wouldn’t exist, and we genuinely feel like we’re celebrating this moment together.”
Since then, Talmey and his team have been deeply engaged with the Whitby community through events like beer festivals, supporting local musicians, trivia nights, running events, and fundraising for various causes.
“We are dedicated to strengthening our community through positive efforts and enjoyable experiences,” Talmey noted. “Our goal is to create exciting, inclusive moments within our community based on quality and connection while feeling your support as we work toward that aim.”
Their previous location on Charles Street near the lake has been a favorite spot for craft beer lovers for years. However, as developers eyed their rented space for more profitable ventures, the brewery team began searching for new premises.
Initially planning to relocate to Burns Street and Garrard Road, when Brock Street closed down along with 12welve Bistro at 244 Brock Street recently, it became an opportunity they couldn’t ignore.
<p“One concern we've always had is not having a permanent home base. That's why we're thrilled to announce (this) news,” he expressed enthusiastically. “We're excited about taking charge of this fantastic space and can't wait to operate all three floors under the Town Brewery name.”
The restaurant on the first floor will remain closed temporarily for renovations as Town works through its designs right now.
“We expect to reopen later in 2026. You’ll need some patience but we know you’ll love it.”
The newly named Jackson Hall (2nd floor) and The Office (3rd floor) will be closed briefly but both spaces will be available for events later this month. “We want to host your private parties, weddings and birthdays; so reach out!”
The brewery and taproom at 1632 Charles St will stay open with Talmey describing it as “business as usual down there.”
Talmey along with his ownership team expressed gratitude towards their “amazing staff and family” who helped bring them here today. “Town Brewery wouldn’t exist without your dedication, love and hard work. None of this would have happened without each of you; we’re excited about moving forward together.”
“Today is definitely a great day.”
The post on Facebook generated several hundred responses from fans eager to check out the new venue when it opens up; even former Brock Street Brewery employee Steve Moser commented that while he was sad about Brock Street closing down he was “happy to see Town Brewery taking over.”
Well wishes poured in from Toronto beer writer Jordan St. John – known for tracking openings and closings (mostly closings) within Ontario brewing – who humorously noted he can now “erase that red highlight. Nice!”
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy also showed enthusiasm about the news by sending her “huge congratulations”to the brewery team.
“Town Brewery is already an integral part of Whitby’s tourism narrative with its seasonal pop-up at the waterfront alongside its taproom on Charles Street. Watching them expand into this central location is wonderful news not just for our local economy but also everyone who appreciates Whitby’s growing food scene,” she stated.
