Authorities have secured Grand River Collegiate Institute (GRCI) in Kitchener, along with several nearby schools, after a series of hold and secures and a lockdown were implemented on Monday.

Waterloo regional police responded to a call regarding a weapon in Kitchener, which led to GRCI being placed under lockdown “as a safety precaution.”

The lockdown measures for nearby Crestview Public School, Chicopee Hills Public School, and Stanley Park Public School have since been lifted.

Officials are now stating that the situation was a swatting incident, where a false report was made to provoke an emergency response. In their press release, they mentioned that officers received information around 9:20 a. m. about an individual allegedly having a gun inside GRCI.

“Through investigation, it was determined that the reported incident had not occurred,” police said.

The release indicates that officials suspect this call was targeted and the investigation is still ongoing.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION:

There is an increased police presence in the area of Indian Road and Heritage Drive in Kitchener for a weapons-related call.
